Third Games, To Decide Two Series

The 2005 Lake City Cup, Best of Three, Quarter Finals started this week with Your Fathers Moustache (7th) taking on the Dartmouth Alpines (2nd), T.J. Devils (6th) up against the Secunda Mariners (3rd) and Scotiabank (5th) versus Big Leagues' Rangers (4th).

Tuesday night had Game 1 between Scotiabank and the Big Leagues' Rangers. Scotiabank started the scoring on a goal by Danny Brewer. The Rangers' Allan Lake tied it 1 with 6:16 left in the period. Scotiabank regained the lead with a shorthanded goal by Troy Stevens with just 11 seconds remaining in the 1st. The shorthanded goal seem to spark Scotiabank, as they fired off 4 straight goals to take a 6 to 1 lead, scoring for the 'Bank was Danny Brewer, his 2nd of the game, Glen Buchanan, Rodney MacIntosh and Allen Coyle. The 5 goal lead forced the game into the mercy rule. The Rangers responded once more on a goal by Richie Holmes, only to be followed up by Rodney MacIntosh's 2nd of the game for Scotiabank.
The 7 to 2 thrashing, gives Scotiabank a 1 game to 0 lead.

Game 1 of Series 'B' had the Secunda Mariners eke out a 4 to 3 win over the T.J. Devils. The Mariners started the scoring with a powerplay by Keifer House. The Devils tied the game at 1 before the period ended on a goal by Tony Breau. Secunda regained the lead on an unassisted goal by Doug Clark. T.J. Devils took their first lead of the game, scoring 2 goals 12 seconds apart by Tony Breau and Mike Sandford. The powerplay clicked again for the Mariners' Keifer House, as his 2nd goal of the game at 7:07, tied the score at 3. With just 2:57 remaining in regulation time Dana Drake potted what would be the game winner and give the Mariners a 1 game to 0 lead.

Thursday night had the 3 time Lake City Cup Champions Dartmouth Alpines down Your Fathers Moustache 8 to 3 in game 1 of their Quarter Final match-up. The Alpines led 3 to 2 after the 1st period on goals by David Denike, Scott Wadden's powerplay goal and Graham McLeod. Mike Shea and Sean Fraser replied for Your Fathers Moustache. Dartmouth exploded for 4 goals in the first 10 minutes of the 2nd period, to take a 7 to 2 lead. Dave Fader, Graham McLeod, Peter Gallant and a powerplay goal by Todd Parker did the damage for the Alpines. Both teams traded one more goal each, Sean Fraser, his 2nd for Your Fathers Moustache and Dave Fader his 2nd of the game for Dartmouth. The game was a spirted game with both teams collecting 14 minutes each in penalties.

Game 2 was "do or die" for the T.J. Devils, and they stayed alive for another day with a 5 to 4 overtime win. The Mariners looking to sweep the Devils took a 3 goal lead on a shorthanded goal by Keifer House, his 3rd goal of the series, Dana Drake's powerplay goal and Doug Clark. Chris O'Donnell found the net for the Devils before the 1st period ended. T.J.'s jumped out fast in the 2nd, scoring 2 goals a minute 38 seconds apart to tie the game at 3. Steve Kinch and O'Donnell's 2nd of the game. Secunda regained the lead on a powerplay goal by Andy Clark, the powerplay goal was the Mariners 4th of the series. Secunda ran into penalty trouble themselves in the 2nd period and it cost them as Tony Breau scored for the Devils tying the game at 4. Neither team scored for the rest of the period, forcing it into overtime. A late penalty by Devils' Scott Hughes, with just 54 seconds remaining in the 2nd period, gave Secunda their 3rd powerplay of the game. The Mariners were already 2 for 2 in the game. Only 1 minute and 1 second into overtime, Chris O'Donnell scored a shorthanded goal, giving him the hattrick and keeping the Devils alive in the series.

Scotiabank were hoping for the series win, in game 2, but fell short, losing 4 to 2 to the Big Leagues' Rangers. Scotiabank had plenty of chances on the powerplay, but only went 1 for 7. The Rangers staved off the series sweep on 1st period goals by Richie Holmes, Mark Whebby and Allan Lake. Scotiabank did all their scoring in the 1st, on goals by Troy Stevens, his 2nd of the series and a powerplay goal by Rodney MacIntosh. Shane Murphy of Big Leagues scored the insurance goal in the 2nd period, to tie the best of 3 at 1 game apiece. Chiefs' goaltender Jason White played his second straight game for the Rangers, as Paul Forest was unavailable.
