The Secunda Mariners captured their second Lake City Cup, completing a 3 games to 1 victory over the Sandtrap Chiefs. The Mariners claimed the 2005 Lake City Cup by doubling up on the Chiefs, in game 4, with a 6 to 3 win.
The Mariners started the scoring at 7:20 of the 1st period on Dean Tucker's 5th of the playoffs, with Rick Findley and Derek Taylor assisting. The Chiefs tied it up at one, 1:52 later on an unassisted goal by Shane Gibbs.
Derek Taylor, of Secunda scored his first of the Finals with 1:39 remaining in the 1st period, giving them a 2 to 1 lead after one. Dean Tucker and Jeff Crowell chipped in with helpers.
The 1st period was a tight checking period, with neither team not giving up too many chances and both goaltenders, Corey Irving of the Mariners and Jason White of the Chiefs, looking sharp.
The 2nd period continued the same way, until 11:33 mark, when Rick Findley's shot found the net on a screen shot from the point. Dean Tucker picked up his 3rd point of the game with an assist, along with Shawn Doyle. The goal gave them a 2 goal lead of 3 to 1.
Derek Taylor scored his 2nd goal of the game, at 8:09, Derek's goal was a beautiful deke on a breakaway while the Mariners were shorthanded. Shawn Doyle assisting on the goal. The shorthanded marker seem to take the wind out of the sail for the Chiefs.
Andrew Hawrylak scored his second of the post season at 6:01. Doug Clark and and Dana Drake adding helpers to give them a 5 to 1 lead.
Sandtrap having to open it up, rallied for a pair of goals, starting at 5:37, on Trevor Doyle's 1st of the playoffs. Brian McIntoch and Kelly Saunders assisting. That goal was followed up 16 seconds later, as Craig Whynot moved in from the point to pot one over Irving. Doyle and Bill Morris added helpers to narrow the score to 5 to 3.
The Chiefs, having to take chances, gave up a breakaway to Keifer House, who finished off the scoring and clinched the Lake City Cup for the Secunda Mariners, with 2:28 remaining in regulation time. Dana Drake and Doug Clark assisted on the final goal of the 2005 playoffs.
The Sandtrap Chiefs dream season came to end. Having only lost three games during the 24 game regular season, lost 4 out of 7 in the playoffs. The Chiefs unfortunately, headed into game 4 missing their top line of Roddy MacCormick, Mark Walsh and Gord Dickie. Paul Wright played his first game of the finals, after popping out his shoulder against Scotiabank.
The Secunda Mariners claimed the 2005 Championships by defeating the T.J. Devils in the Quarter Finals, 2 games to 1. They followed that up in the Semi Finals by downing the 3 time Lake City Cup Champions, Dartmouth Alpines, 2 games to 1, before winning the Final in 4 games.
