Game 1 Lake City Cup Final
Shamrocks up early.
Alpines keep fighting back.
Arrant pass costs.
Game one of the 2008 Lake City Cup Final started Tuesday, with the Moose Light Shamrocks out scoring the Dartmouth Alpines 7 to 5, to take a lead in the best of three series.
Moose Light jumped out to a 2 to 0 lead, on Shane Gibbs' fourth goal of the playoffs and Gord Dickie's second, only 4:41 into the game.
The Alpines fought back with a pair of their own 1:18 apart on goals by Scott MacKinnon and Darren Welsh to tie it at two.
Playoff leading scorer Paul Wright popped in his eighth, to regain the lead for the Shamrocks. Jules Laraque restored a two goal lead with 3:21 remaining in the first, scoring on a breakaway on Alpines' goaltender Dave Fallows.
Dartmouth's MacKinnon fired home his second of the game 57 seconds later to narrow the score to 4 to 3 after the first period.
The Alpines for the second time in the game, after being down by two, tied it up on Jay Washington's 6th marker of the playoffs. They took the lead for the first time in the game on a nice two on one, with Jeff Bigelow burying one past goaltender Jason White, on a great pass from Todd Parker, at the 12:52 mark of the second period.
The Shamrocks tied the game up at five, on great work down low by Paul Wright and Trevor Doyle to set up Jules Laraque, all alone in front, for his second of the game.
An arrant pass up the middle was intercepted by Shamrocks' Shane Gibbs, who moved in on Fallows and beat him on a backhander with only 2:33 remaining in regulation time to give them a 6 to 5 lead. It was Gibbs second of the game and became the game winner. Sebastien Decaens once again restored a two goal lead for the Moose Light, as he netted his fifth of the playoffs.
The Shamrocks kept taking the lead, only to have the Alpines scratching their way back. Moose Light will have to figure out how to hang on to a lead, because Dartmouth does not give up. The Alpines will try not to get behind early and play a more controlled game when they have the lead.
Game two of the series goes Thursday, March 27th at 9:00pm.
