Alpines fight back.
Shamrocks put it away.
Moose Light Shamrocks, Lake City Cup Champions. The 2008 Lake City Cup Finals are over, with the Moose Light Shamrocks sweeping the Dartmouth Alpines 3 games to 0, with a 7 to 4 victory. The Shamrocks franchise won their second Lake City Cup in their 23 year history, winning 20 years ago in 1988.
The game started out in a flurry, Moose Light starting it off only 34 seconds in, on Rick Findlay's 2nd off the playoffs. That was followed up just 34 seconds later on a goal by Dartmouth's Dwight Lucas, only to have the Shamrocks go up 2 to 1 36 seconds after that on Todd Sparks first of the finals.
The Shamrocks built on that lead scoring the next 3 goals. Shane Gibbs fired the first one past goaltender Todd Bengert at 14:32, that was followed by Jason Troini's 3rd and 4th of the playoffs, at 10:32 and again at 9:02, to give them a commanding 5 to 1 lead.
Alpines' Dwight Lucas scored his 2nd of the game and 3rd of the playoffs at the 5:51 mark of the 1st period, on a nice breakaway backhander on goaltender Jason White. That goal seem to spark the Alpines, as Todd Parker scored a minute and 38 seconds later, that was Todd's 5th of the post season. The 1st period ended with the Shamrocks up 5 to 3.
Dartmouth continued their comeback early in the 2nd period, when defenceman Darren Welsh blasted a powerplay goal only 45 seconds into the start of the 2nd period, to narrow the score to 5 to 4 for Moose Light. Unfortunately for the Alpines that would be as close as they would get.
Shamrocks' Shane Gibbs opened up a 2 goal lead at the 10:20 mark of the period. It was Gibb's 2nd of the game and 7th of the playoffs.
Moose Light would put it away when killing off a penalty to Rick Findlay at 5:37. A faceoff deep in the Shamrocks zone was won by Jules Laraque to defenceman Todd Sparks, who whipped it around the boards to hit Findlay coming out of the penalty box for a breakaway and beat Bengert on a rebound backhand. That would be the final goal of the 2007- 2008 season.
Dartmouth would pull their goaltender for an extra attacker and apply great pressure on Jason White and the Shamrocks, but Jason stopped them all.
The Moose Light Shamrocks are the 2008 Lake City Cup Champions and just like in the regular season when they went on a 11 game winning streak, they did it again, winning all 7 games they played in the playoffs. They bounced the Rinkrats in 2 straight games, out scoring them 15 to 3. They then put out the defending Lake City Cup Champions Secunda Mariners 2 game to none. The Dartmouth Alpines were next as they were swept in 3 games.
The 2008 Most Valuable Player of the playoffs was Moose Light Shamrocks' Paul Wright, who was also the playoffs' leading scorer with 8 goals 6 assists for 14 points, Paul also had 2 game winning goals.
Shamrocks' goaltender Jason White, just like in the regular season, was the top goaltender of the playoffs, with a 2.84 goals against average.
