2014 Semi Finals begin; Turkey's stun Moustache in a shootout; Mariners double up on the Rinkrats.The 2014 Best of 3 Semi Finals began on Tuesday, with upstart Wild Turkey's taking on Your Fathers Moustache and the Secunda Mariners battling the Realty Partner Rinkrats.
The early game had the Wild jump out to a 1 to 0 lead at the 7:27 mark of the 1st period, when Terry Tremblay found the twine past Cody Cuvelier. Pat Dufour and Greg Sheffer added helpers.
The Wild lost to YFM 9 to 0 in the last game of the Round Robin, but could not beat Greg Aucoin until the last minute of regulation time. Aaron Akitt tied the game at 1, with 52 seconds remaining, forcing overtime. Neal Pashkoski and Steve MacDonald assisted on the goal.
The Wild had 1 powerplay during the 10 minute overtime, but could not beat Cuvelier.
The game remained tied at 1 and headed to a 5 player shootout. The Moustache's Akitt shot first and was stopped, Wild's Tremblay scored, YFM's Pashkoski missed, Wild's Todd Miles opened up a 2 to 0 lead, YFM's Sean Fraser narrowed the score to 2 to 1, Tomas Strynel of the Wild scored their 3rd straight goal, Terry Forbes of the 'stache scored to make it 3 to 2. Cody Cuvelier needed to stop Pat Dufour to give the Moustache a chance to tie, but the Wild Turkey's shooters would make it 4 straight and take Game 1 of the series 2 to 1.
In the nightcap 3rd place Mariners took on 2nd place Rinkrats in Game 1 of their Best of 3 Semi Final.
The Mariners jumped out to a 4 to 0 lead after the 1st period on goals by Graeme Power at 16:22 assisted by Jason Troini and Jim Morash; Troini made it 2 io 0 at 13:18 assited by Bruno Carpentier; Chris O'Donnell scoring at 12:09 with help from Jonah Leroux and Andrew Hawrylak; and Derek Taylor popping one at 7:27 with Troini assisting for his 3rd point of the night.
The Rinkrats regrouped in the 2nd period, scoring at 17:53 on a goal by Jeff Sanford, Justin Dowding and Mike Anderson added helpers. The 'rats would score again with 11:12 remaining on Chris MacNeil's first of the Semi Final, Scott Leverman had the helper.
Secunda's goaltender Andrew Sim would stop the Rinkrats the rest of the way and give them a 1 game to 0 lead.
