Secunda Mariners 2014 Lake City Cup Champions
back row: Rob Sneath (MVP), Chris O'Donnell, Andrew Hawrylak, Jim Morash, Jonah Leroux, Gerard Bray, Ian Marshall, Steve Widmeyer, Jason Troini.
front row: John Robb, Bruno Carpentier, Graeme Power, Lake City Cup, Derek Taylor, Dean Tucker, Andrew Sim.The Secunda Mariners won their 5th Lake City Cup by defeating the defending Champions' Your Fathers Moustache in the 5th and deciding game, by a score of 5 to 0.
Both teams were cautious to start the game, neither team giving up scoring chances.
The line of Derek Taylor, Jason Troini and Greame Power of the Secunda Mariners opened up the scoring at 10:54 of the 1st period, when Troini buried his 4th of the Finals and line mates Taylor and Power assisting.
With Mariners' Bruno Carpentier in the penalty box for holding, team mate Chris O'Donnell roofed an unassisted shorthanded goal past YFM's Todd Bengert at 4:41.
That was followed up by another Secunda shorthanded goal with 2:17 remaining in the 1st period, when Steve Widmeyer hussled in the zone on a dump in and beat Bengert to the puck and wrapped the tally into an empty net to put the Mariners up 3 to 0, Andrew Hawrylak and goalie Andrew Sim chipped in with assists.
The 1st period ended with that score. Secunda not giving the Moustache much to work with, despite having 2 powerplays, only to give up a shorty on both of them.
The 2nd period continued to frustrate the Moustache as they could not get many chances on Sim and when they did he was stopping them all.
Widmeyer would add his 2nd of the game at 7:38, with Chris O'Donnell and Jim Morash adding helpers. A minute and 27 seconds later, Troini found the net again and again linemates Taylor and Power assisting.
The Mariners' 5th goal seem to take the life out of Your Fathers Moustache as they could not beat Sim on this night, as he picked up his 1st shutout of the playoffs.
Secunda Mariners' Rob Sneath was choosen 2014 Most Valuable Player, in 10 playoff games he had 3 goals and 8 assists for 11 points and also controlled the backend, game in and game out. Honourable mention to Jason Troini who had 9 goals, 6 assists for 15 points in 7 games, as well as 2 game winning goals including the Lake City Cup winning goal.
Steve Widmeyer is the only player on the team to win all 5 Lake City Cups with the Mariners franchise, going back to their 1st one in 2001.
Mariners' Jim Morash won his 7th Lake City Cup, more than any other player in the league's 32 year history. 6 of those Cups were with the Rangers.
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Secunda Mariners and Your Fathers Moustache on great playoff as well as the Wild Turkey's, Realty Partner Rinkrats, Dartmouth Alpines and Realty Partners and all of their players on a great season.
Thank You for participating in the Lake City Gentlemen's Hockey League and have a Great Summer!
