The 2005-06 campaign marks the 24th season of the Lake City Gentlemen's Hockey League. The Sandtrap Chiefs Begin their 21st season while the defending Lake City Cup Champions, Secunda Mariners hit the 20 year plateau.
The league again will be a seven team league, rounded out by Big Leagues' Rangers, Your Fathers Moustache, T.J. Devils, Dartmouth Alpines and Scotiabank, with the first place team at season's end getting a first round playoff bye.
This season sees an increase in the price of both the ice at the Dartmouth Sportsplex and the on ice officals. The Sportsplex has also become the home of the Canadian Elite Hockey League's Dartmouth Destroyers. With the Destroyers now playing and practicing at the Sportsplex, our start times on Tuesdays is now 9:00pm and on Thursdays it is 8:30pm. We are also pre-empted a couple of Thursday dates due to a CEHL game (read our league carefully).
With the cost of each team playing in the league jumping up and the later start times for our games. Teams were asked to vote on two different schedules. One the same as last season, which saw each team play a 24 game regular season schedule, consisting of 2 games on Tuesdays and 3 games on Thursdays or a new one, that sees each team play a 18 game schedule, with 2 games on Tuesdays and just 2 on Thursdays. Playoff schedule remains the same as last season in both schedules. Four out of seven teams voted for the shorter 18 game schedule, citing both cost and late games for their reasons.
The 2005-06 season will be an 18 game regular season schedule, with each team playing each other 3 times. Games will be at 9:00pm and 10:15pm on Tuesdays and 8:30pm and 9:45pm on Thursdays. Games will continue to be 2 - 20 minute stop time periods. Mercey rule and overtime are still in effect if required.
At the start of the season the league will do a 3 game trial of removing the center red line. Teams will then vote on keeping it out or putting it back in.
Teams have been asking the about eligibility of players in the league. In our League Guide - Section XII, Rule # 3 ELIGIBILITY: All players must be 30 YEARS of age or older. Each team is also allowed a maxium of two new players that are no younger than 27 years of age each season. No team can use a player who is playing in a contact league for the duration of the playing season (Senior, Collage or Recreational Contact League). If a team is caught using an ineligible player, the team will forfeit that game and that player will not be allowed to play in the league for the duration of the season or until they are old enough.
The league does not have a grandfather rule, meaning that if they were ineligible last season and got away with it does not mean they can do it again this season. This topic of age seems to come up every year. It has been suggested that we put everybody's birth date on the bio page of this web site, if teams are not going to follow the rule, 1978 is the magic year. The new Canadian Elite Hockey League is a contact league and players playing in it are ineligible to participate in our league.
Good Luck to all the teams, lets keep it clean and fun!
