2008-11-01

Tony Peers of the Rangers scores on Canadians' Peter Douglas, in a 9 to 2 thumping.

Recap of Week 2 and Week 3: Mariners sailing along. Rangers a little OT magic. Canadians shell shocked. Lake City Cup champs looking like chumps. CFB Halifax games have been added to schedule.

Due to the Christmas Craft Show at the Dartmouth Sportsplex on Thursday, October 23rd, week 2 of the season only had 2 games. The first game saw the Secunda Mariners double up on the Moose Light Shamrocks 8 to 4 on Tuesday, October 21st.The Mariners jumped out to a 3 to 2 lead after the 1st period on goals by Steve Widmeyer, Graeme Power and Rob Sneath. Kelly Serbu and Rick Findlay replied for the Shamrocks. The 2 teams traded goals 50 seconds apart with Widmeyer scoring his 2nd of the game at 12:58, only to be followed up by Shamrocks' Chad Brind'Amour.
The turning point of the game happened when Keifer House scored 2 shorthanded goals, 28 seconds apart at 6:08 and 5:40 remaining in regulation time. Shamrocks' Findlay popped his 2nd of the game to narrow the score to 6 to 4, but thats as close as they came. Secunda added 2 more goals by Doug Clarke to finish off the scoring.

In the second game of the night, had the Bacardi Rangers come back from a 3 to 0 deficit to defeat Your Fathers Moustache 4 to 3 in overtime. The Moustache fired the first 3 goals of the game on shots by Sean Fraser, Jeff Fraser and Trent Boswick. The game took a different turn after the Rangers' Brian Melanson received a double minor for roughing and a game misconduct at 12:45 of the 2nd period. Shane Murphy started the come back at 9:45, followed by Mark Whebby's shorthanded goal at 7:03 and Dave Hessian's game tying goal with 1:52 remaining, forcing overtime. Mission complete when Richie Holmes fired home the game winner 2:32 in OT.

Week 3 started on Tuesday, with the Lake City Cup champ's Shamrocks looking for their first win of the season, taking on Your Fathers Moustache. The champs looking like chumps fell short as the Moustache on a couple of powerplay goals defeated Moose Light 3 to 2. The Moustache trailed after the 1st period 1 to 0 on a goal by Shane Gibbs, but rebounded with 2 powerplay goals early in the 2nd period by Mike Fougere and Andrew MacVicar. Shamrocks' Shane Gibbs fired his 2nd of the game at 11:50 mark, to tie it at 2. It looked as though the Moustache were heading to overtime for the second straight game, but with only 1:24 remaining in regulation time Craig MacDonald blasted home the game winner. Moose Light only lost 5 games all of the 2007-08 season and just 3 games in to this season have 3 losses.

The nightcap had the Rangers feeling pretty good about their 4 to 3 overtime comeback last week and blasted the Scotian Canadians 9 to 2. The game was pretty close, at 3 to 2 for the Rangers with just over 10 minutes remaining in the 2nd period, when Bacardi erupted for 5 goals in 3 minutes and 31 seconds and then adding one more for good measure late in the game. Rangers' Shane Murphy, Allan Lake and Reg Bowes led the attack with 2 goals apiece, while Tony Peers, Jim Morash and Richie Holmes added singles. Scotian Canadians' Jamie Richard and Allen Coyle's shorthanded goal replied in the loss.

Thursday had the Rinkrats skip past the Dartmouth Alpines 6 to 4. The 'rats kept battling back all night, until they finally took their first lead of the game with 7:53 remaining in the 2nd period, it was followed by an insurance goal with 3:03 left in regulation time. The Alpines jumped out to a 2 to 0 lead on goals by Dave Fader and Glen MacDonald, only to have Justin Dowding and John Dean tying the game at 2. Dartmouth's Graham MacLeod scored to give them a 3 to 2 lead after the 1st. Justin Dowding added his 2nd of the game at 11:13 to tie it at 3. Once again the Alpines take the lead on a shot from Scott MacKinnon and again it is followed by Rinkrats' drawing even on a goal by Craig Perrin. The Rinkrats finally took the lead on Perrin's 2nd goal of the game and was followed up by Dowding's hattrick goal with just over 3 minutes remaining.

OUCH!, the Scotian Canadians played their second game of the week and probably wish they hadn't, as the Secunda Mariners blasted them 17 to 2. What can you say? The Mariners were led by, count'em 6 goals, John Robb, yes John Robb. Keifer House and Steve Widmeyer buried hattricks, Chris Pitts popped 2, while Ian Marshall, Doug Clarke and Andrew Hawrylak added singles. Secunda's Derek Taylor helped out with 6 assists. The Canadians answered with goals by Dwayne Coyle and Jamie Richard. The win kept the Mariners undefeated for the season at 3 and 0. The Canadians will want to forget this week quickly as they were out scored 26 to 4.

Show me the money !, we have some bills to pay for October.

The regular season schedule has been updated with games against CFB Halifax Mariners. The first game has the Secunda Mariners playing on Sunday, November 9th. All games are at the Shannon Arena at 6:00pm. Good luck to all of our teams as the games will count in our leagues statistics.
