Mariners Handed First Place

2004-03-17

The final night of the Regular Season had one of the biggest games of the season. There was so much on the line as the Big Leagues' Rangers, needing just a tie to claim 5th place, taking on the Secunda Mariners. They too just needed a tie to claim 1st place. The rest of the League would have to wait until the outcome of this game to see who they would be playing in Quarter Finals. For the first time this season, a game was forfeited as the Big Leagues' Rangers were unable to get a goaltender for the game and forfeited the game to the Mariners 5 to 0. In the last game of the regular season, saw the Dartmouth Alpines cruise pass the Fairview Aces 9 to 3. An 8 goal first period by the Alpines proved to be too much for the Aces. Dartmouth had a balanced attack, as seven different players scored, led by Jay Washington and Todd Parker with 2 goals each.

The best of three Quarter Finals are now set to go, Series 'A' has Your Fathers Moustache taking on the Secunda Mariners. Series 'B' the Fairview Aces up against the Sandtrap Chiefs, Series 'C' has last season Lake City Cup Finalists the Big Leagues' Rangers challenging the Dartmouth Alpines and Series 'D' Scotiabank tackling the T.J. Devils. Playoffs start on Thursday 18th, Aces vs Chiefs @ 8:00pm; Rangers vs Alpines @ 9:10pm and Scotiabank vs T.J. Devils @ 10:20pm. Please note there are no games schedule for Tuesday 23rd, the Dartmouth Sportsplex are putting logos in the ice for the Women's World Hockey Championships. See schedule for upcoming games.

I would like to take this time to congratulate the Secunda Mariners Hockey Club on winning their third President Trophy, for finishing in 1st Place in the Regular Season. They previously won in 1992 and 1990. This years leading point scorer, for his third year in a row was Secunda's Keifer House. Keifer, in 22 games had 41 goals, 34 assists for 75 points. The top goaltender for goals against average, his fifth such award, is Paul Forest of the Big Leagues' Rangers. The Most Valuable Player and Most Gentlemanly Player as well as the Playoff awards will be announced at a later date. Good Luck to all the teams in the Playoffs, and for those teams still owing League fees please bring them in.
