2004-04-19

Semi-Sunday had the Lake City Gentlemen's Hockey League changing venues, to the Halifax Metro Centre. The Secunda Mariners looking to sweep the T.J. Devils and the third and deciding game between the Dartmouth Alpines and Sandtrap Chiefs in this season's Semi Final action.

Just like in Game One the Secunda Mariners jumped out to a big lead and never looked back, as they swept T.J. Devils in two straight games with a 9 to 2 romp. Secunda struck for four goals by Keifer House, Chris Kelly, Steve Widmeyer and a powerplay goal by Jeff Crowell before Tony Peers replied for T.J.'s. Mariners' Keifer House scored his second of the game to round out the scoring in the first period, giving them a 5 to 1 lead. The second period started the same as the first as Secunda continued it's scoring attack with four more goals, forcing the game into the Mercy Rule. Hitting the twine for the Mariners were Scott Pellerine, Andy Clark, John Robb on the powerplay and Andy Clark's second of the game and eighth of the playoffs. The Devils managed one more goal to finish out their season, by Scott Fairburn. The Mariners went 2 for 4 on the powerplay while the Devils went 0 for 3. Secunda Mariners head back to the Lake City Cup Final for the first time since 2001, when they won their only Cup in their 17 year history.

The third and deciding game between the Dartmouth Alpines and the Sandtrap Chiefs also took place Sunday, the winner to face the Secunda Mariners for the Lake City Cup. It took only 23 seconds for the Alpines to get on the scoreboard on a goal by Chris Boutilier, that was followed up 36 seconds later by Jay Washington's goal. The game settled out a bit with both teams having some scoring chances. Shane Gibbs found the net with a blast from the point to narrow the score to 2 to 1. Dartmouth's Dwight Lucas regained the two goal lead when he swatted the puck out of the air past goaltender Jason White at the 4:45 mark of the first, Sandtrap protested the goal, but to no avail. Sandtrap popped another before the period ended at 1:56 on a goal by Bill Morris. The game, the same as Game One and Two was a very close with no room for error. The Alpines, once again took a two goal lead on Jay Washington's second goal of the game at 15:34 of the second. At the 12:46 mark Alpines' Dwight Lucas took a double minor penalty and a game misconduct. The Alpines took another penalty 13 seconds later to go down by two men. The Chiefs with a 4 minute powerplay and two of the minutes a two man advantage were unable to get the puck past Dartmouth's goaltender David Howell. With time winding down and the Chiefs down by two, pulled their goalie, only to have Todd Parker seal the Chiefs faith with an empty net goal. Sandtrap's goaltender still out managed to score once more, but with only 13 seconds remaining in regulation time. The two time defending Lake City Cup Champions, Dartmouth Alpines win the game 5 to 3 and the series 2 games to 1 will now defend their title against the Secunda Mariners starting on Tuesday at the Halifax Metro Centre.
