Mariners Strike First In Triple Overtime

2004-04-21

If Game One is any indication, this should be an exciting Finals. The Secunda Mariners needed triple overtime to take Game One of the Lake City Cup Finals, pulling out an 9 to 8 victory over the Dartmouth Alpines.

The Mariners opened the scoring at 18:34 of the first period on a goal by Scott Pellerine, his 4th of the Playoffs. Alpines' goaltender David Howell was injured on that goal and was replaced by Graham McLeod at the 17:39 mark of the period. Secunda's Shawn Doyle made it 2 to 0 on a shorthanded breakaway from center ice. Dartmouth ansewered back on a nice end to end effort by Scott Wadden. Andy Clark restored Secunda's two goal lead when he fired his Playoff leading 9th goal. Alpines' Chris Boutilier ended the first period scoring with 2nd of the Playoffs to make the score 3 to 2 for the Mariners.

Midway through the second period both teams combined for four goals, two each, in 2 minutes and 35 seconds. Alpines' Keith Harrietha struck first at 9:36 to tie the game at three, that was followed by Kevin Lynch of the Mariners at 8:50. The Alpines tied it up again on Jay Washington's 5th of the Playoffs only 29 seconds later. A powerplay goal by Scott Pellerine, his second goal of the game, gave the Mariners their 4th lead of the game. Secunda opened up a two goal lead with only 2:10 remaining in the second period, on a blast from Jeff Crowell. With just 1:44 left Mariners' Steve Widmeyer took a slashing penalty plus a coincidental double minor with Alpines' Todd Parker to give Dartmouth a powerplay. Widmeyer was thrown out of the game for his third minor penalty of the game. The Alpines went to work and Darren Welsh scored just 17 seconds into  the powerplay, to come within one goal. The Alpines pulled goaltender Graham McLeod for an extra attacker and with 36 seconds remaining in regulation time Peter Galant tied the game up at six, forcing overtime.

In the first ten minute overtime period neither team managed to score. The game now went into the second overtime period, a five player shootout. Secunda being the home team elected to have Dartmouth shoot first. The first seven shooters failed to score, for Dartmouth; Jay Washington, Scott Wadden, Todd Parker, Darren Welsh were stopped by Mariners' goaltender Corey Irving. As for the Mariners; Chris Kelly, Scott Pellerine and Keifer House went goalless on Graham McLeod. Secunda's 4th shooter, Kevin Lynch finally got things going with his second of the game. The Alpines down to their 5th shooter, Pat Tardif, notted the game up at seven. Secunda with last shot chosed Andy Clark to finish the game but Graham McLeod came up big and forced a third overtime period. League Rules indicates that each team will shoot one at a time until there is a winner, teams can reuse any of their first five shooters, but only once, they must go through the whole team if necessary. Alpines put the pressure on, when the first shooter, Glen MacDonald, found the twine to give them their first lead of the game, 8 to 7. Keifer House replied for the Mariners to once again tie it at eight. Next up was Dartmouth's Jay Washington, who was stoned by Corey Irving. Kevin Lynch, who had scored in the second overtime, was up again and just like in his last shot, scored, giving Secunda the victory and Kevin the hattrick. The Mariners who had given up a late two goal lead in regulation time managed to pull out the win by the final score of 9 to 8.

Game Two is set for Wednesday night at the Halifax Metro Centre starting at 10pm.
