The 2009 Lake City Cup Finals begins Tuesday with the 1st place Secunda Mariners taking on the 2nd place Dartmouth Alpines in the best of 5 series.

The Mariners had a first round bye, for finishing first place in the regular season. They advanced to the final with a 2 game sweep of the 5th Bacardi Rangers by scores of 4 to1 and 8 to 2.

Dartmouth defeated 7th place Scotian Canadians 2 games to 0, downing them 8 to 1 and nipping them 3 to 2. The Alpines moved on to meet last season Lake City Cup champions the Shamrocks. The Shamrocks won game 1 in a shootout 3 to 2. The Alpines evened the series with a 4 to 3 victory. The 3rd and final game also went to a shootout, this time the Alpines winning 3 to 2.

The Dartmouth Alpines are gunning for their 6th Lake City Cup, which would tie them with the Rangers organization for most Lake City Cup championships. This is Dartmouth’s 9th trip to the dance, winning their first in 1998 followed by victories in 2002, 2003, 2004 and their last one in 2006.

The Secunda Mariners are making their 7th trip to the final. They won 3 of the previous 6 trips, winning it in 2001, 2005 and 2007.

The Alpines and Mariners have met twice before in the Lake City Cup Final. Dartmouth defeated Secunda 2 games to 1 in 2004 and beat them again in 2006 3 games to 1.

The Dartmouth Alpines won the season series with the Secunda Mariners 2 games to 1. The Mariners won the first game 8 to 4, with the Alpines winning the last two games by identical scores of 5 to 3.
