Game One Recap: Mariners win 6 to 2. Widmeyer buries a hattrick. Irving out with injury.

The 2009 Lake City Cup Final began with the Secunda Mariners sinking the Dartmouth Alpines 6 to 2, led by Steve Widmeyer’s three goal performance.

Secunda’s goaltender Corey Irving sat out the game with back spasms and was replaced with the Shamrocks’ Jason White.

The Mariners opened the scoring only 59 seconds into the game with Rob Sneath firing his 3rd goal of the playoffs. Steve Widmeyer goal at 17:36 mark made it 2 to 0 early, with Keifer House and Bruno Carpentier chipping in with helpers.

The Dartmouth Alpines narrowed the score at 15:12 of the 1st period with Jay Washington’s 4th of the post season, Dave Fader and Steve Nelson assisting. Alpines’ Todd Parker tied the game at 2 at 9:03, Scott MacKinnon and Darren Welsh assisted on Parker’s 5th , to round out the scoring of the first period.

The Mariners regained the lead at 15:49 of the 2nd when Steve Widmeyer fired his 2nd of the game past Alpines goaltender Todd Bengert. The goal assisted by Doug Clarke would become the game winner.

Keifer House found the net with his 1st of the playoffs at 13:47 while shorthanded to restore a 2 goal lead, Graeme Power was credited with the setup.

Widmeyer completed the ‘trick at 10:29 with John Robb and Jeff Crowell adding helpers. A minute and five seconds later the Mariners increased there lead to 6 to 2 on defenceman Bruno Carpentier blast, Ian Marshall and Jeff Crowell helping out.

Dartmouth went 0 for 4 on the powerplay and gave up a shorthanded goal, Secunda went 0 for 2 with the advantage.

Due to the SEDMA tournament starting on Thursday, game 2 is schedule for Tuesday, April 7th.
