The week long break did not help the Dartmouth Alpines, as they fell in game 2 to the Secunda Mariners by the score of 4 to 1.
Both teams were missing key players in game 2. Starting with the Alpines regular season scoring leader Dave Fader, along with Glen MacDonald and defenceman Dave Denike. The Mariners played without game 1 star Steve Widmeyer, as well as Ian Marshall, Derek Taylor and Chris Pitts. Mariners’ goaltender still out with back spasms was replaced by Mark Haverstock, who was the Alpines backup goaltender during the season.
The Dartmouth Alpines opened the scoring at 16:53 of the 1st period on Scott MacKinnon’s 1st of the finals and 2nd of the playoffs. Jay Washington and Ian Sullivan assisting on the goal to give the Alpines their first lead of the series.
Secunda tied the game at 1 with a powerplay goal from Keifer House, assisted by Doug Clarke at 9:49 mark of the 1st.
The Mariners took a 2 to 1 lead before the 1st period ended on a goal from John Robb with help from Andrew Hawrylak.
The game was played at a high tempo, up and down, with both teams having great scoring chances with Alpines goaltender Todd Bengert and Mariners’ Haverstock stealing the show.
On a Alpines’ give away Mariners’ Keifer House scored unassisted on a breakaway, deking out Bengert to open up a 3 to 1 lead at 7:46. Secunda took advantage of another give away and with 4:40 remaining in regulation time Rob Sneath fired his 2nd of the series and the final goal of the game.
Secunda went 1 for 1 on the powerplay, while the Alpines were 0 for 1 and gave up a shorthanded goal.
The Secunda Mariners now lead the best of 5 Lake City Cup Final 2 games to 0 and can claim their 4th Lake City Cup on Thursday. The Dartmouth Alpines have other ideas going into game 3.
