The Secunda Mariners recaptured the Lake City Cup, having won it last in 2007, by sweeping the Dartmouth Alpines 3 games to 0 with a 5 to 2 victory.
The Mariners were without Ian Marshall, Steve Widmeyer and Keifer House as well as Corey Irving, replaced again by Mark Haverstock. Glen MacDonald, Scott MacKinnon and Dave Fader were missing from the Alpines line up.
The Alpines opened the scoring at 13:47 on a goal from defenceman Darren Welsh, his 2nd of the post season, with Todd Parker and Jay Washington assisting.
The Mariners tied the game at 1 only 34 seconds later on a shot from Graeme Power, with an assist from Andrew Hawrylak.
Power fired his 2nd of the game at 9:32 of the 1st, with help from Chris Pitts and Jeff Crowell to take a 2 to 1 lead. Rob Sneath continued his goal scoring streak firing his 5th of the playoffs, one in each game the Mariners played in the post season. Sneath’s goal was on the power play and assisted by Power at 2:31.
Dartmouth narrowed the score to 3 to 2 with 59 seconds remaining in the 1st period, as Graham McLeod found the twine past Mark Haverstock. Dave Denike and Todd Parker contributed with assists.
The 2nd period opened up with the Mariners scoring at 17:10 on a blast from the point from Bruno Carpentier, his 2nd of the finals, with Derek Taylor and Doug Clarke assisting on the play.
The Alpines ran into penalty trouble in the 2nd starting with Darren Welsh’s 3rd of the game and a trip to the dressing room. Secunda scored their 2nd power play goal of the game at 14:38. Jeff Crowell lighting the lamp, with assists going to Chris Pitts and Graeme Power, for Power it was his 4th point of the night. Dartmouth would kill off a couple more penalties, but lost a lot of time on the clock.
The Mariners went 2 for 5 on the power play and did not take a penalty in the game.
The Secunda Mariners claimed their 4th Lake City Cup and 3rd in the last five years, winning it in 2005 and 2007. Unfortunately for the Dartmouth Alpines they were swept in Lake City Cup Finals for the second year in a row.
The 2009 Most Valuable Player of the playoffs was Secunda Mariners’ Rob Sneath.
