Lake City Cup 2010 Final begins Tuesday.

Rinkrats versus Moose Light Shamrocks. How they got there. How they matchup.

The 2010 Lake City Cup Finals are set to start on Tuesday, March 23rd with Game 1 of the Best of 5 Final between the Rinkrats and Moose Light Shamrocks.

This is the first trip to the Lake City Cup Finals for the Rinkrats in their 10 year history. The Shamrocks are looking to capture their third Lake City Cup and 2nd in three years.

How they got here.

The 5th place Rinkrats started the 2010 playoffs taking on 4th place Your Fathers Moustache in the Best of 3 Quarter Final. The Rinkrats made short work of the Moustache, winning in 2 straight games by scores of 7 to 4 and 6 to 3.

The Rinkrats would meet the 1st place Secunda Mariners in the Best of 3 Semi Final. Secunda, which had a first round bye, opened the series with a 3 to 2 victory. The Rinkrats would tie the series at one, scoring a goal with 21 seconds remaining in regulation time to give them a 3 to 2 win. The Rinkrats would pull off one of the biggest upset in the history of the Lake City Gentlemen’s Hockey League. With less than 5 minutes remaining the ‘rats tied the game at 3 and then scored with just over 2 minutes left in the game, followed up by an empty net goal. The final was 5 to 3 and won the series 2 games to 1 to advance to the Lake City Cup Final.

The Moose Light Shamrocks finished in 3rd place during the regular season and would face off against 6th place Bacardi Rangers in the Best of 3 Quarter Final. The shorthanded Rangers were no match for the Shamrocks, losing by scores of 5 to 2 and 9 to 3.

Moose Light would now face 2nd place Dartmouth Alpines, which eliminated the Scotian Canadians in their Quarter Final. Moose Light would take game 1 of their Best of 3 Semi Final by a score of 4 to 3. The Alpines tied the series at 1 apiece, with a 6 to 4 victory. Moose Light would take advantage of a short roster by the Alpines defeating them 4 to 1 and a 2 games to 1 series win.

How they match up.

The Moose Light Shamrocks and Rinkrats faced each other four times during the regular season, with the Shamrocks winning all four games. The first game was November 19, 2009 a 5 to 2 victory. January 5th, 2010 saw a score of 2 to 1. Shamrocks nipped the Rinkrats 4 to 3 on February 4th and followed it up with a 7 to 1 thrashing on February 23rd.

Moose Light were led by Jason Troini in scoring during the regular season with 19 goals and 14 assists for 33 points in just 13 games. Goaltender Jason White carried the load with a 10 and 7 win / loss record and 4.02 goals against average. The Shamrocks had only 6 power play goals during the regular season, but also had scored 6 shorthanded goals, 3 from the stick of Mark Walsh.

Matt Kerr of the Rinkats was their top scorer, contributing with 15 goals and 15 assists for 30 points in 17 games. Craig Perrin was a close second with 27 points, 12 of them goals. Sean Murphy tended goal with a 4.44 goals against average and a 6 – 10 win / loss record. The Rinkrats had 8 power play goals this past season and 5 shorties.
