Chiefs Withdraw Scotiabank

2005-03-16

The Secunda Mariners, having advanced to the Lake City Cup Final after defeating the three time Lake City Cup Champions the Dartmouth Alpines, wait for the winner of Scotiabank versus Sandtrap Chiefs series. The third and deciding game took place on Tuesday night.

5th place Scotiabank were looking to upset the Regular Season Champions Sandtrap Chiefs and game 3 was right for the picking, as the Chiefs were short staffed, with only eight skaters available.
Sandtrap took advantage of an early powerplay to take a 1 to 0 lead on Brian McIntoch's 2nd goal of the series only 2:34 in to the 1st period. The Chiefs increased it's lead only 66 seconds later, on a unassisted goal by Scott Cote.
Scotiabank cut the score in half at 14:15 of the 1st period on Rodney MacIntosh 5th goal of the playoffs.
The 1st period ended with the Chiefs leading 2 to 1, they also managed to kill off 3 penalties, while scoring on their only powerplay opportunity.
Scotiabank, with a full roster, tied the game at 2 at 15:43 of the 2nd period on a goal by Todd Miles. Roddy MacCormick scored 1minute and 33 seconds later to give the Chiefs a lead again.
Brian McIntoch scored his 2nd of the game with 6:11 remaining in regulation time to restore a 2 goal lead for Sandtrap. Roddy MacCormick would score his 2nd goal of the game at 3:32, to open up a 3 goal lead.
Danny Brewer of Scotiabank scored once more, but with only 1:14 left in regulation time. Scotiabank pulled goaltender Peter Douglas in hopes of tying the game, only to have Roddy MacCormick complete his hattrick and lead the Sandtrap Chiefs into the 2005 Lake City Cup Finals, with a 6 to 3 victory and a 2 games to 1 series win.

The Secunda Mariners take on the Sandtrap Chiefs in the best of five 2005 Lake City Cup Finals, starting Tuesday, March 22nd. The two teams will be looking for only their 2nd Lake City Cup Championship.
The Mariners, in their 19th season, won the Lake City Cup in 2001. They were known as Toyota East then and Andy Clark is the only remaining member of that championship team.
The Chiefs, playing their 20th season, only championship victory came in 1988, when they were known as the Builders Market Hawks. Darryl Braine, Scott Cote, Bill Morris, Kelly Saunders and Troy Stewart were part of that 1988 team and still remain with the franchise.

Sandtrap only lost 3 games in the regular season, but 2 of them were to Secunda. The Chiefs winning their first 2 meetings by scores of 7 to 4 and 8 to 3, with the Mariners winning the next 2 by scores of 8 to 5 and 6 to 5.
The Chiefs are led by this years' league leading scorer Roddy MacCormick, while Keifer House, last years league leading scorer will lead the Mariners. Mariners goaltender Corey Irving and Chiefs goaltender Jason White can expect to be busy in this series, as both Sandtrap and Secunda are two of the league's highest scoring teams.
