Chiefs Take Final Opener

The 2005 Lake City Cup Finals started on Tuesday night, as the Sandtrap Chiefs played host to the Secunda Mariners, in game one of the best of five championship.
Sandtrap made the first dent in the series, with a 5 to 2 victory and a one game to none lead.
The Chiefs jumped out to an early 1 to 0 lead, only 48 seconds into the start of the game, on Roddy MacCormick's 6th goal of the post season, Craig Whynot assisted. Mike Johnson made it 2 to 0 at the 15:31 mark of the 1st period, MacCormick and Whynot's playoff leading 7th assist drew helpers on the goal.
The 1st period ended with the Chiefs leading 2 to 0. Both teams had several scoring opportunities, but goaltenders Jason White of the Chiefs and Corey Irving of the Mariners kept the score low.

The Mariners jumped out quickly at the start of the 2nd period, cutting the score in half, just 29 seconds in. Dana Drake's 4th of the playoffs, assisted by Keifer House and Doug Clark.
Sandtrap responded to that goal only 19 seconds later to regain their 2 goal lead. Craig Whynot fired his first of the playoffs past Irving, to give the Chiefs a 3 to 1 lead. Mark Walsh and MacCormick assisted on what would be the game winner.
Secunda would narrow the score once more at 14:36 of the 2nd, on a goal by Andrew Hawrylak, assisted by House, his second of the game.
Just like the Mariners first goal, the Chiefs attacked quickly, scoring 53 seconds later, Shane Gibbs doing the damage, assited by Johnson and MacCormick.
The Chiefs would open up a 3 goal lead on a blast from Gibbs, his 2nd of the game, with 6:04 remaining in regulation time. Shane's goal was assisted by Scott Cote and Brian McIntoch.
Goaltender Jason White and the Chiefs' defence smothered the Mariners the rest of the way to give them a 1 game lead.
The contest, was as billed, an up and down, fast pace game with several scoring chances and great goaltending. Both teams stuck to playing hockey as neither team drew a penalty.
Game 2 takes place on Thursday 24th at 9:00pm, as the Mariners look to even the series at one.
